ABOUT PYSL, INC.
We are PYSL, Inc. dba Pacific Youth Soccer League. We were formed in 1971 as a non-profit soccer league serving the youth of Pacific Beach and South La Jolla . We expanded over the years to include the children of West Clairemont, Bay Park and North Point Loma. We are still a non-profit organization run by volunteers. We are affiliated with California Youth Soccer Association-South (CYSA-S) and follow the rules of USSF (United States Soccer Federation.) We use referees that have been certified through USSF for all divisions except Under Six.
Our home games are scheduled either at Bob McEvoy Youth Fields on Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach, Crown Point Elementary School on Ingraham Street in Pacific Beach, and Bay View Terrace on Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach. Practices will be held on various fields according to space availability. If we do not get enough teams of any age division we will loop our teams with La Jolla, Coronado , Point Loma and Clairemont leagues. This usually happens in the under 10-16 divisions but could happen in any division except under 6.
Each coach will set the practice times and days of the week for his or her own team. Players are expected to attend all practices in order for them to be able to play in the game. If a player must miss practice, coaches should be notified before the scheduled practice time. All players must have shin guards and cleats to practice and play in. No player will be allowed on the field without the proper equipment. All games are played on Saturdays starting from 8:00am until 4:00pm.
Season dates this year are September 8 through November 17.
Under six teams do not keep scores as they are all winners when the snack is served. Under eight and under ten divisions will be aware of who won and who lost but we do not keep standings. Under twelve and up will have an intra-league scorekeeper who will keep standings. Under eight teams and up will send all-star teams to a tournament in December.
Following is a list of divisions with information about each.
Under 6 - Micro Soccer
Children in this division cannot be six years of age and must be at least four years of age before August 1 of the seasonal year. The majority of the children in this age bracket will be kindergartners and pre-schoolers. The type of soccer in this division is called “Micro-soccer”. Micro-soccer started to gain popularity about ten years ago. It is a great way to learn soccer. The children are placed on teams of ten players, both boys and girls. They will have a coach and an assistant coach. While the team practices together, the games are played by splitting the team into two 5-player teams. Both halves play against another team also split in half. The games are played simultaneously right next to each other with coaches from both teams on the field with the kids at all times. There are no referees, the coaches act as such. This eliminates the coaches from yelling instruction from the sidelines. The teams play 3 vs 3 with the other players substituting in, there are no goalies. There is a lot of play time and the kids learn simple soccer skills like throw-ins, kicking not touching, shooting a goal, running the right direction, etc. Almost every child will make at least one goal during the season…very ego boosting! This division practices once a week usually for one hour and all 40 minute games are played at Bob McEvoy Youth Fields each Saturday during the season. This division requires a size 3 ball.
Under 8 and Under 10
Children in the under eight division should be six years old and cannot be eight years old by August 1 of the seasonal year. Children in the under ten division should be eight years old and cannot be ten years old by August 1 of the seasonal year. This division plays eight on eight and each team fields a goalie. There will be a center referee scheduled for each game. Off-sides will be taught at these levels and the games are played just like a regular game except for the smaller field sizes and smaller teams. Teams will typically practice once a week for about 1 ½ hours and play at Bob McEvoy Fields or Bayview Terrace Elementary School . Please see note above about travel. The under 8 division requires a size three ball and the under ten requires a size four ball. Scores are kept although standings are not used.
Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16
The players now move into a full size field and play 11 on 11. Depending on the coach most teams will practice twice a week for 1 ½ -2 hours. The players will work on passing skills and game strategy at this level. There will be a center referee scheduled for each game. Games become more physical and standings will be kept. All home games are played at Crown Point Elementary School or Bayview Terrace Elementary School and teams will travel. (See note above about travel.) Under twelve players require a size four ball and Under 14 and 16 require a size five.
